What is a port freeze?

If you currently have an account with another provider, you may be under a port freeze. The Lifeline Assistance Program requires a lock-in period (or a port freeze) after you sign up for a free phone service. That means, if you receive only free calling (no data), you must keep your service with the same provider for 60 days. If you receive free data, you’re required to keep your service with the same provider for 12 months. During this time, you will not be able to transfer your service from another provider to Q Link Wireless.

But don’t worry! If you want to switch to Q Link, simply sign up at We’ll tell you when your port freeze ends and when you’ll be eligible to switch your service to Q Link Wireless. You’ll even be able to complete your application up to 90 days before your port freeze expires, so your application is ready for approval, with no extra waiting. Once approved, we’ll transfer your Lifeline service to Q Link and ship your free phone straight to your door!
